Sara Joins Eastern Maine Labor Council to Celebrate Maine’s Workers
Sara Gideon joined the Eastern Maine Labor Council’s virtual Labor Day event.
Today, U.S. Senate candidate Sara Gideon joined the Eastern Maine Labor Council to commemorate Labor Day and honor Maine’s workers. Sara spoke with union members from across eastern Maine, highlighting the importance of fighting for Maine workers in the Senate.
“Hardworking Mainers are the driving force behind our state, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them,” said U.S. Senate candidate Sara Gideon. “In the State House, we’ve fought to protect Maine workers by strengthening collective bargaining rights and making sure they are always paid what they’re due. Mainers need that same kind of leadership in Washington. They deserve a senator who will put them, not special interests, first — and that’s what I’ll do in the Senate.“
“Sara Gideon has consistently stood up for working families, be it at the State House in Augusta, at the picket line in Bath or right here in Brewer helping out with our Solidarity Harvest. We need people in the U.S. Senate who will stand up for working families, not for those at the top,” said Jack McKay, President of the Eastern Maine Labor Council, which includes 34 affiliated unions with over 5,000 Members. “Above all, Sara has shown the ability to listen to people and to truly represent our interests, and those are skills we need in the U.S. Senate.”
In the State House, Sara has fought for Maine’s workers by expanding job training programs, closing a loophole to ensure Maine’s workers are paid what they’re due, and passing a first-in-the-nation paid time off law for Maine’s workers. Sara also blocked Governor LePage’s attempts to pass Right to Work legislation and undermine collective bargaining rights, and blocked attempts to lower Maine’s minimum wage.
Sara has been endorsed by more than a dozen labor unions, including several who have flipped from previously supporting Senator Collins, including the Maine State Council of Machinists, the Massachusetts and Northern New England Laborers District Council, and the Painters and Allied Trades International Union District Council 35.
Sara has also been endorsed by the Maine AFL-CIO, Maine State Building and Construction Trades Council, Maine State Association of Letter Carriers, the New England Regional Association of Heat and Frost Insulators, the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the International Association of Machinists Local S89, American Federation of State and Council Municipal Employees Council (AFSCME) 93, Ironworkers Local 7, the American Postal Workers Union Local 458, Carpenter Local 349 and Carpenter Local 352, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 4, United Food And Commercial Workers Locals 749 and 1445.
