NCPSSM Flips to Support Sara Gideon After Supporting Senator Collins in 2014
Today, on the 55th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid being signed into law, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM) announced its endorsement of Sara Gideon in the Maine Senate race, citing her long record of fighting for Maine seniors and working families in the State House. NCPSSM has previously supported Senator Collins, and now joins a growing list of advocacy organizations and labor unions that have flipped to endorse Sara this year.
“Maine’s seniors and retirees count on the benefits they earned through a lifetime of hard work, and as Maine’s senator, I will fight back against any proposed cuts to Social Security and Medicare,” said U.S. Senate candidate Sara Gideon. “From protecting seniors from being charged more for health care just because of their age to restoring a low-cost drug program that thousands rely on, I’ve fought for Maine seniors in the State House, and I’m proud to have the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare so that I can continue to fight for them in the Senate.”
“As Maine’s Speaker of the House, Sara fought tooth and nail against an opposition determined to stop the Medicaid expansion from taking effect in Maine,” said National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare President Max Richtman. “Sara’s consistency in being a champion for the Affordable Care Act demonstrates her values and shows that seniors can trust that she will always vote for their best interests, and not just when it is convenient. With Sara’s proven track record of getting things done to help seniors and working Americans, National Committee members know they can count on Sara.”
As Maine’s Senator, Sara will continue to protect the benefits that seniors have earned and will fight against irresponsible giveaways to corporations that jeopardize those benefits. Sara will also oppose any efforts to cut funding or benefits from Medicare, to change Medicare as we know it, or to turn it into a voucher system.
Sara has been endorsed by numerous organizations and labor unions that have flipped from previously supporting Senator Collins, including the Massachusetts and Northern New England Laborers District Council, the Painters and Allied Trades International Union District Council 35, the Human Rights Campaign, the League of Conservation Voters, Planned Parenthood, Everytown for Gun Safety, NARAL, and the Natural Resources Defense Council Action Fund.
Sara has also been endorsed by over 75 elected officials from across Maine including Governor Mills and Rep. Chellie Pingree (ME-01), as well as the Maine AFL-CIO, Maine State Building and Construction Trades Council, Maine State Association of Letter Carriers, and End Citizens United.
